I love widgets… they are fun, useful, and when designed properly, very good at what they do, at their specific function.
While I personally run Konfabulator, today
Yahoo! Widget Engine, I just learned about Opera Widgets…
And there are widgets on the Mac, and there will be in the upcoming version of Windows, and there are other
widget engines. Will Firefox provide their own support and flavor of widgets? I see it coming.
But now that widgets are becoming so popular, do I need to be concerned about “widget fragmentation”, and having to deal with all these flavors of widgets? I will be developing some widgets for some ideas that I have, but I don't want having to write three or four different types of them.
The widget community should get together, and define a consistent way to describe and write widgets… That way we can develop one set of widgets, and let the users decide where and how to deploy, and run them…
