As you may know, the XMLHttpRequest object is at the center of AJAX, and while it is implemented across Web browsers, the implementations are not 100% interoperable, requiring special handling by developers.

The goal of this W3C XMLHttpRequest specification is to “document a minimum set of interoperable features based on existing implementations, allowing Web developers to use these features without platform-specific code.”
