I've been playing with the Nokia 3220. The 3220 is a S40 handset targeted at the mass consumer market. I would add that it is targeted at the youth population with its embedded camera, and support for EDGE, SMS, MMS, Java, and light and sound effects, and robust construction — see Nokia 3220 spec web page.

But the handset has something else that is special… No, it's not the set of lights and sound effects that can be programmed into cool visual sequences, nor its support for EDGE. So what is it?



The answer is a small socket under the covers… a socket to install a Near Field Communication (NFC) transceiver, that when combined with the NFC development kit, you can develop applications for this phone that uses RFID for things such as secure contactless payment or ordering…
