Phil Solis, of ABI research, writes Get Ready for a Wave of Mobile Internet Devices, where he briefly covers the kind of new Intel-based devices that he saw at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF).

  • MIDs (mobile Internet devices) have been derived from concepts such as Nokia’s web tablets and WWAN-enabled UMPCs. note: I disagree with this definition, as it is not totally accurate; mobile handsets/cellphones are (have been for a long time) MIDs.
  • UMPCs (ultra mobile PCs) are very small form factor PCs. They run PC OSs like Windows XP and Vista, and they run PC apps. They are very expensive.
  • UMDs (Ultra mobile devices) = UMPCs + MIDs (Ultra mobile devices = ultra mobile PCs + mobile Internet devices).
