Just learned via Ander's blog, that Sony Ericsson is in the process of acquiring UIQ from Symbian.
This is pretty big news.
This ties the fate of UIQ directly to SonyEricsson.
I always thought UIQ is a superior interface that provides great experience and usability. I'm a fan of UIQ, and of touch screens and handwriting recognition, functionality that should be part of any advanced mobile platform, including the S60 — touch-screen is just a more natural and efficient method to navigate and choose. I've written a couple of articles on Symbian OS and UIQ in the past (see my web site http://cenriqueortiz.com), but I have to
catch-up with the latest releases of UIQ, currently at version 3 for Symbian OS v9.
You can read the official press release.
Update: A very good related writeup at All About Symbian: The story behind Sony Ericsson and UIQ Technology
