I was with my Finn friends at SXSW when one of the Finns, while looking at his (Android) handset said “Hey there is this event at XYZ happenning now; let’s go there!” To what I said, “Cool, what do you use to know? Foursquare, Gowalla, other app?” His response? “SMS”.
Ha! I thought that was funny, how we have all kind of cool apps/tools with location and whatnot, yet, SMS can still be king.

A possible compromise: Not intended to blatantly advertise, but Abiro provides SMS with location in Sweden, hence normal SMS with the addition of network/cell based location, with a map and reverse geocoding. The precision is consequently pretty coarse, but at least you’ll know whether you are in the vicinity. It also means it works on any phone, as long as you have a data plan and the operator allows me to tap into the location information.
