Building a company, building a team

Building a company is no easy task. Building an A+ team is even harder. Building teams from scratch, one that consist of the right kind of folks, with the right vision, and passion, with the right personality, and expertise, one that serves as the “baseline” of what is to come, that is the future culture and spirit, one that you can let go do their thing, knowing that they will repeat the hiring cycle that you have once initiated, resulting in generations of employees that are as good or better as the first one, is a very hard thing to accomplish. But it is an awesome thing to accomplish.

Things such like “top-notch people”, “a culture that promotes individualism yet team spirit”, “dynamic”, “passion”, “fun”, “productive” are characteristics of a team that will work together, enjoy life while doing so, and yield amazing results.

And so here are my top three rules of hiring:

  1. Hire smart people, who are better than yourself — look for completeness, passion, and ignore little and irrelevant details; anything else can be learned (or refreshed)
  2. Hire people of different qualities, personalities, backgrounds, gender, cultures, chemistry — balance of opinion is important, so is being able to agree, disagree, and agree to disagree
  3. No Assholes Allowed… (pardon my English!)
