We are at the 3rd generation of (native) Mobile apps (Aug 2014).

The first generation was introduced to the “masses” circa 1998-1999. Those were the 1st generation of mobile apps built for the first generation of mobile handheld devices such as PalmOS, J2ME, WinCE, BlackBerry OS and Nokia devices. The 2nd generation came with iPhone and Android (2007-2008) giving (re)birth to a new generation of rich mobile apps that made the rest pretty much obsolete; many of the companies behind the 1st generation such as Nokia, BlackBerry and Microsoft were affected in major ways, some are gone while others and are still trying to recover. More recently, we have entered the 3rd generation of mobile apps.
