great post. you are pointing to one of the key barrier for the development of the app economy. App discovery is something we are trying to solve with http://appsfire.com

We allow users to share their own apps, we feature vips and the best selection accross the web and will launch soon innovative discovery mechanism

We also organizing an app contest called the app star awards (appsfire.com/appstar2 ) to highlight the best upcoming iphone apps (in the previous edition the winners ended in the store top rankings)

We ll be in Austin for SXSW and would love to meet to discuss with you about our plans

best

@Jose: Thanks. Discoverability is an issue and better ways to categorized, filter and find applications needs to be invented over time. I believe it is a changing problem, for now.

Thanks for the analysis. I would agree with you Apple didn't have the application side of the model figured out... but they had a great launching point in iTunes (and the related experience gathered along the way).

How much of an issue would you say discoverability is in the App Store (seeing that they are glutted with apps)? If you are not profiled (i.e. have no ranking) it is very difficult to get noticed.

Thanks Phil. It is hard to say if Apple had the apps-side of the ecosystem figured out. Apple started w/ a web approach to applications. They definitely had music-side figured out. Yes extending the iTunes model to applications was the right thing to do.
