Cisco defines ‘mobility’ — too narrowly

Cisco’s CEO John Chambers defines ‘mobility’ at Mobile World Congress 2008.

Their definition is way to narrow, and it reveals their true nature (still), which is “an equipment manufacturer”:

“Most people talk about mobility in terms of a device,” he told analysts and reporters Monday. “But the challenge is to think of mobility as the ability to connect any device to any content at any time, anywhere in any mode. It really goes across a combination of networks.”

Their definition is totally inline with their mission which is “to sell more hardware by interconnecting more of them”.

But their definition for Mobility ignores the most important element of mobility itself, which is the person, the individual. Related to this see The Mobile Handset – A Social Artifact.
