• 5:30-6:15 pm — We will start by having a number of local startup companies demonstrate their products: Ringful, SocialMuse (Android Developer Challenge winner), Trust Nexus, MediaSourcery, AVAI Mobile, Edioma.
• 6:20-6:50 pm — We will have David Gill from Nielsen Mobile talk about the current state of mobile industry.
• 6:55-7:25 pm — We will have the Central Texas Technology Incubator panel with the Austin Technology Incubator (Bart Bohn), Austin Entrepreneur Network (Hall Martin), Idea Finishing School (Dean McCall), and Tech Ranch Austin (Jonas Lamis), with Erin Defosse, local entrepreneur and past Director of the ATI and AWA, as panel moderator.
• 7:30-8:00 pm — We will have Hall Martin of the Austin Entrepreneur Network give a presentation on Funding Sources.

Mark your calendars! The next MobileMonday Austin event is scheduled for December 7, 2009, 5:30-8pm.

For this event we will have a number of Central Texas Technology Incubators come in and talk about what and how they help local mobile developers and start-ups. We will also have a local Angel investor present on “Funding Sources”. And we will have some local companies demo their mobile products. It is going to be a very interesting and informative event!

It is great to see how many chapters we have now / how much the MobileMonday community has grown over the last years…

The Austin chapter was founded on May 10 of 2005 and today it consists of more than 280 members. Our mission has remained the same “an open community of mobile professionals and enthusiasts in Austin, TX, that share both a common interest in mobile technologies and a desire to foster cooperation among individuals, the industry and academia.”

Last Monday Feb 23rd we had our MobileMonday Austin meeting. The topic was “Rich Local Applications and Applications Stores”. The meeting started with David Gill of Nielsen Mobile who gave an excellent presentation on industry metrics on mobile applications and usage. This was followed by Dr. Michael Yuan of Ringful who covered iPhone applications and app stores, followed by Andrew Donoho of DDG who covered technology strategy and the iPhone.

It was a very good meeting, with tons of great info, all possible thanks to our sponsors and speakers: the Austin Wireless Alliance (AWA), Motive/Alcatel-Lucent, Ringful, Nielsen Mobile and the Donoho Design Group, and of course, to everyone who attended.

Talk synopsis:

There is heavy latent demand for mobile applications and recent industry events have heightened interest in mobile Web applications. Mobile application developers face a number of inherent challenges of mobility such as form factor and user interaction. Besides these, they are also forced to deal with incidental issues such as platform fragmentation and unreliable connectivity. Various “Rich Internet Application” platforms are currently targeting these problems. Oracle, of these, is interested primarily in standards-based platforms, i.e., Web browsers and AJAX. Therefore, Oracle has developed a solution to the network unreliability problem in the context of Web browsers, Oracle’s AtomDB . This technology provides a transparent, local, read-write cache for application data that is synchronized with data sources using the same REST APIs used by AJAX applications to access their data. This talk will focus on the dual use of IETF’s Atom publishing protocol for application programming as well as data synchronization. He will also discuss areas of future work in off line data for Web applications.

Speaker bio:

Since his early days, Nikunj has been working in the crosshairs of mobile and Web as well as business and data. He is an entrepreneur at heart and an architect at work. Nikunj leads the AtomDB project at Oracle and helps shape Oracle’s strategy in distributed applications, mobile technology, and Web databases. He works in Oracle’s Database Advanced Development Group. His doctoral thesis focused on implementation primitives for distributed software architecture styles. He dons the colors of USC and University of Mumbai, both in computer science.
